Road-Trippin' On Spring Break

By Rene Santana on March 18, 2019

It’s spring break and every college student has planned some sort of activity, from sleeping twelve hours straight, to spending time with family or even going to festivals. During the break, there’ll be traveling involved as well, and while this is similar to that of the holidays, it’s certainly much sunnier and warmer this time of the year.

Something about the longer days, blooming trees, and warmer temperatures, makes us want to escape our college town and go on a road trip to see friends, family, concerts, parks, and new towns and cities. As you guessed, I’ll indeed be talking about road-trippin’ in all their magnificence.

Here in the Pacific Northwest (PNW), we have two major freeways, I-5 and I-90, connecting cities such as Spokane to Portland, all the way down to San Francisco, and far east to Chicago (to New York too, if you’re wanting to spend all of the spring break driving). And while this may be exclusive to the PNW, it should be no surprise that if you drive far out enough on any major freeway, you’re bound to end up in some city or town.

Sure, you could fly out to any city, but it’ll cost more and give you less of a view than driving. The freedom to stop anywhere, at any point is just one of the many joys of traveling by car across boundless roads and dirt strips.

If you want to find out who your true friends are, take them on a road trip to see their friends, your family, or a festival. I found that some of my best spring break memories were traveling across the state with a friend, only to realize how comfortable and honest they were with me. It’s an incredible time to bond together, even if there is some arguing involved. But even after the trip is said and done, the memories, sights, talks, and events you went to with friends are often the ones you remember most of all.

And the sights you’ll see! After being cooped up during the winter months, you might be itching to get out of your abode to feel the sun. With the snow melting away and the trees out in full bloom, the drive from county to county should bring some marvelous landscapes to gaze at in awe. It also wouldn’t hurt to share your road trip with your Instagram followers by posting pictures of said marvelous landscapes on your story. Also, it’s no secret that travel photos of glorious landscapes are some of the more popular photos, along with food, cats, and trending memes.

Some of what I’ve discussed is coincidentally from this New York Times article on the booming era of road trips. To directly highlight a passage, Stephanie Rosenbloom states the most significant reasons roads trips are appealing, “according to the research report, are the flexibility of being able to stop along the way, and of being able to pack whatever and however much people want to take in the car.”

Roads trips are also personal and much more manageable than airplane travel, which is guaranteed to cause headaches at some point. So if you’re still wondering what to do with your time off school, just call up a friend, hop in your car with snacks and drinks, drive to the next city, town, national park, or state, and explore to your heart’s content.
